Morgan Academy has rallied back to the .500 mark this season and has taken a big step toward the postseason.

The Senators earned a hard fault victory on the road Friday night and Atmore with a 22-6 win against region opponent Escambia Academy. The win puts the Senators in third place in the AISA Class 3A, Region 2, with a very good chance of making the playoffs with just one region game remaining on the schedule.

Morgan and Escambia entered the game evenly matched.  Both teams had overall records of 2-3, and all of their previous victories had come against teams that were winless on the season. Things are different now due to the outcome at Bachelor Field.

On the rural campus of Escambia Academy, Morgan outscored Escambia 14-0 in the first half and rode two goal-line stands to the victory with the Cougar’s only score coming on a fumble return for a touchdown.

The Senators took an early lead on their first possession. Baron Frazer hit Speedie Pernell with a 37-yard touchdown pass to put Morgan up 6-0.

Frazer then capped a 99-yard, 15-play drive with a 14-yard run. And after the two-point conversion, the Senators had a 14-0 lead. The drive came after a goal-line stand by the Morgan defense. The Senators had another goal-line stand in the second half, and Rhett Thomas scored on a five-yard run to give the Senators a 22-0 lead before Escambia had a scooping score to close the margin to the final score of 22-6.

The Morgan Academy defense did not give up any points on the game. The Morgan Academy offense was powered by Johnson and Johnson. Senior running back Jack Johnson had 74 yards rushing for the Senators, and sophomore quarterback Patrick Johnson connected on three of four passes for 59 yards.

With the victory, Morgan moves to 3-3 on the season and 1-2 in region play while Escambia slips to t2-4 overall and 1-2 in region Play.

The Senators return home next Friday to face Clark Prep in the final region game of the season.

At that game on Friday night, the Senators will retire the jersey of their fallen teammate, Caden Tellier, who passed away after sustaining brain injuries in the Senator’s first game of the season.
