The 2024 season continues to take long and winding turns for the Morgan Academy Senators.
A week after locking up a playoff spot in the AISA 3A classification, the Senators had to take a long road trip to face undefeated and third ranked South Choctaw Academy.
It was not a pleasant trip for Morgan. The Senators were defeated by the Class 2A Rebels at Jackson Field by the final score of 58-14.
The win boosted South Choctaw’s record to 9-0 marking the first time they’ve won that many games in a season since 2014 and the first time the Rebels have been undefeated this late in the year since they won the Class 1A championship in 2007.
Meanwhile, Morgan’s record drops to 4-4 with one regular season home game remaining before the state playoffs began on Nov. 8.
In a rare Thursday night game, Morgan just was not able to stop SCA’s overpowering rushing attack. The Rebels rolled up 366 yards on the ground and accumulated 120 yards through the air. Jackson Boykin rushed for 147 yards on 12 carries, including three first half touchdowns. Cade Carroll added 81 yards on five caries.
The Morgan Academy Senators were unable to effectively move the ball against South Choctaw Senior running back. Jack Johnson managed to gain 62 yards on 15 carries for Morgan, and Walter Gilmore ran for 31 on five carries.
Sophomore quarterback Patrick Johnson threw for one touchdown and ran for another. He completed seven passes and 12 attempts for 107 yards and was intercepted twice.
Speedie Pernell led Morgan Academy’s receivers with five catches for 88 yards.
Morgan’s next game is November 1st. At home against Lowndes Academy. It will be senior night. For the Senators Morgan will honor Ben Duran, Walter Gilmore, Jack Johnson, Jake Sams and Barron Frazer who missed the South Choctaw game after tearing his ACL and having surgery earlier in the day.
