The Central Alabama Fair, sponsored by the Selma Lions Club, is approaching its 68th year at the Lions Fair Park in Selma.

For many years, it’s been the home where families join together to laugh, play and experience one of the main attractions of the year.

Starting Sunday, the fair located at 2401 West Dallas Avenue will host its second annual trunk-or-treat event starting from 4 to 6 p.m. where families can come out, dress up in their best Halloween costumes and fill their candy bags up with spooky treats.

During the trunk-or-treat, several businesses within the city including local organizations will be giving candy out.

“We also have door prizes to give away,” said Russell Haskell, fair manager for the Central Alabama Fair. “We’ve got a trophy for best trunk, so everybody that comes in will be able to vote. Whoever they think has the best trunk, will receive a trophy for that.”

Haskell said last year, the trunk-or-treat was an overwhelming success and thought of it as a festive way to kick off the fair this year.

“Last year, Halloween fell in the middle of the week, and it just kind of made sense for us, being a community organization to do this,” Haskell said.

Opening night starts a day after the trunk-or-treat on Monday, Oct. 28, and will carry on till Saturday, Nov. 2.

Gates open at 5:30 p.m. most nights and will continue until 9 and 10 p.m. Gate admission is $6.

Armbands are $25 each day throughout the week, and on Saturday, armbands are only allowed to be used from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. After 5 p.m., armbands are not valid.

Attractions such as the Tickle Pink petting zoo will be available for attendees to view alongside the multitude of rides available from the “Super Slide” to the “Zipper.”

Several community members will be having booths catered to food, bingo and basketball.

Other vendors will be there to entertain guests with art and crafts as well.

The fair’s continued schedule starting Tuesday will include a rabbit show sponsored by Alabama 4-H at the ag pavilion and a performance will be held from The Selma Boys starting at 6:30 p.m.

Kids Day will take place on Wednesday for grades K-12 with an admission of $1 children who bring a canned good, and adults will have regular admission of $6.
