Morgan Academy closed out the regular season Friday night with a tough 44-12 home loss to Lowndes Academy on senior night with the visiting Rebels.
The victory extended their school-record winning streak to 28 straight games and ran Morgan Academy’s losing streak to two in a row.
Both teams will now look forward to the playoffs with the Rebels aiming to win their fourth state championship in a row, and the Senators making a return trip to the postseason after missing the playoffs last year.
In the regular season finale for both teams at Morgan Field in Selma, Lowndes Academy took advantage of some big plays and field position to defeat the senators. Jeremy Hardy led the Rebels with 133 yards on 12 carries including two touchdowns, one coming on a 78 yard run.
Braden Stokes the quarterback for Lowndes, added two touchdown passes both to Watters Box to lead Lowndes and their attack through the Air Morgan’s. Only two touchdowns came on, passes from sophomore quarterback Patrick Johnson, the junior wide receiver. Speedie Pernell. The Senators can only manage 175 yards of total offense against the rebels and their swarming defense. That contributed four sacks, including one for safety that sparked the second half outburst for Lowndes Academy.
On senior night. Morgan honored five players in pre-game. Festivities Morgan Seniors are Jake Sams, Ben Duran, Jack Johnson, Walter Gilmore, and Barron Frazer who missed the game following knee surgery last week.
Senior running back, Jack Johnson carried the ball 18 times for 72 yards in the loss. Morgan finishes the regular season with a record of 4-5 and Lowndes completes an undefeated regular season at 9-0. Senators will be on the road in round one of the playoffs. Morgan will face the Rebels of Bessemer Academy on Nov. 8.
Morgan and Bessemer have split their last two meetings with the Rebels winning last year in Selma and the Senators picking up their 400th win in school history in 2022 with a 38-0 shutout of the Rebels up in Bessemer this season.
Both teams finished 2-2 in region play. Bessemer has had the last two weeks off while Morgan has played the second and third ranked teams in Lowndes and South Choctaw respectively. This will be the first matchup between Morgan and Bessemer in the playoffs since the senators defeated the Rebels and the A ISA Class three A state championship game in 2005, which is also the last time Morgan Academy won the state championship.
