The Selma Lady Saints flag football team advance in the Class 1A-5A playoffs after they defeated Northside Methodist Academy 25-6 in Dothan Tuesday afternoon.
The win improves the Lady Saints record to 6-2 overall. They will travel to Tallassee, who defeated Satsuma 68-0, in the second round of the state playoffs.
This is the second year Selma has had a flag football program and the second straight year they have made the playoffs,
Shine Miree, who was an assistant coach last season, has moved up to head coach this season.
He said he is proud of the way his team has played throughout the season.
“We’re a really young team but we are very talented,” Miree said on Tuesday prior to their matchup in the first round. “They have done a great job learning the game and getting better throughout the season.”
When he is talking about the team being young, he’s talking about how some of his best players are eighth and ninth graders. This year, they decided to open up tryouts for all grades.
“My best players are eighth and ninth graders,” Miree said. “We have some that are juniors and seniors that played with us last year, but we’re really talented. The future of this program is bright.”
Miree said before the game that they matched up pretty evenly with their opponent. The Saints held a 6-0 lead at halftime but pulled away in the second half.
In flag football, teams play seven-on-seven. Miree said the concepts are very similar to tackle football.
“Our numbers are up this year because there is a lot of interest in the sport,” Miree said. “I think our girls really enjoy playing the sport.”
