The Dallas County Sheriff’s Department was joined by local churches and organizations to bless families in need this Thanksgiving season by delivering “blessing boxes.”

Kathy Smith with the West Central Baptist Association Women’s Missionary Union said they have done this every year to help people who need help but may not be able to get out to a food giveaway.

“Sheriff Mike Granthum and the sheriff’s deputies come up with the list of people because they are out in the community, and they know which families need help over the holidays,” Smith said. “These boxes are not an ordinary box. We call them blessing boxes because we pray over it at every step in the process. When we are putting the boxes together, we stop and pray. When we made the lists, we prayed over them. When we met on Monday morning, we started with prayer for the families. We prayed with each sheriff’s deputy who went out to deliver the boxes. We even have a flier in the boxes telling them that if they have need we can pray with them about, we give them a phone number to call so that we can pray together about it. Prayer is all over this.”

Partners with the Sheriff’s Department included the WMU, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Epsilon Sigma Alpha, Selma Food Bank and Southside Junior ROTC along with numerous Sunday school classes from local churches who donate their time to put the boxes together.

The met at Northside Baptist Church on Monday, and the Sheriff’s Department then distributed the boxes on Monday.

“We just want to be a blessing to these families,” Smith said. “During this Thanksgiving season, we want them to know that we love them, and that God loves them.”
