Multiple railroad crossings within the city are closed.
The streets that are closed and connected to railroad crossings within the city that will undergo maintenance repairs this week consist of Church Street, Boynton Street, Franklin Street, and Lawrence Street including three others that will close tomorrow.
Starting tomorrow, streets such as J.L. Chestnut, Old Cahaba Road and Alabama Avenue will officially close and all road and railroad crossings mentioned will stay closed until Friday, Dec.6.
“It’s just a typical maintenance thing that happens with the railroads,” said Mayor Perkins Executive Assistant Jasmine Robinson. “When they get so much wear and tear out of them, they do come back in and repair those,” And, like Norfolk Southern did in the past, CSX is now doing the same thing to the railroads.”
Robinson said typically after the railroad crossings are fixed, other construction such as repaving near the crossings will take place, providing vehicles within the city a smoother crossing path than what was presently there before.
Councilwoman Jannie Thomas, who represents Ward 7 said she’s been talking about a particular section within the Boynton Street railroad crossing for a long time that she considers is very bad.
“Five feet from the railroad, there are some bad places in the street,” Thomas said. That needs to be repaired, which we already had discussed and approved within our council meeting which led to a contract that I did with a company out of Maplesville to get it done but I couldn’t do it until the railroad was finished.”
Thomas said since the time has come now for the railroad to be completed, she is actively planning to get the bad wear and tear spots that are just before the railroad crossing fixed through a company called Chandler Seal Coating and Striping, LLC who will gut out all the bad places in the street and fix it the right way so cars within her ward can drive on a pothole -free street.
Soon enough, Thomas said other streets within the her ward will undergo maintenance repairs to fix pot holes within streets of Cedar and Carol,L.L. Anderson, Church Street, and Pollard Street to provide a safer and smooth drive experience for those within the city of Selma.
