Selma City Schools is looking for a new football coach after head coach Leon Day has resigned.
Interim athletic director Martina West said the move was made official last week when the Selma City Schools Board of Education accepted Day’s resignation at their regular December meeting.
“We thank Coach Day for everything he has done for the program, and he has been a great role model for our scholar-athletes,” West said. “We are looking for a coach who will come in here and come help build our program into a competitive program in Class 5A. The job has been posted on our school website, and we would like any and all great, enthusiastic candidates to come and apply for the job.”
Day coached Selma for the 2023 and 2024 seasons compiling a 6-13 record going 4-7 in region play. The Saints started the season 3-0 including a win over rival and Class 3A semifinalist Southside, but they only won one game in the final six games to finish 4-5 just missing the playoffs, falling in a winner-take-all game against Sipsey Valley in the final game of the season. For his career, Day has a combined record of 8-36 in five seasons including one year coaching at Lyman Ward for eight-man football.
The job was posted on Monday and will remain open on the state educators job website until Feb. 1, 2025.
