Selma sweeps Southside

The Selma High School basketball program swept all three games against Southside High School on Saturday night to win the cross-county rivalry.

The Saints defeated the Panthers 58-30 in varsity boys action to cap off the dominant night.

Head coach Ron Rembert said it was a maximum team effort to get the win.

“We knew it was going to be a good game. We knew they were going to be well coached. Tough team to play against. This is a tough environment. Hats off to their coaches for doing a good job with those guys, But our guys seem to want a little bit more tonight, and they were able to go out there and get the victory for us, but our guys seemed to want a little bit more tonight. And they were able to go out there and get the victory for us,” Rembert said.

Tyronne Sheppard led the Selma attack with 22 points followed by Deshaun Flannigan with 14 points. Ladarian Brown also added eight points followed by Samarion Woods with five points, Kristan Moore with four points, T. Blackmon with three points and Tristan Wall with two points.

Southside’s Derrick Surles led the way for the Panthers with eight points followed by Ar’Mari Towns with six points, Z. Shanks with five points, LaTrayveon Davis with four points, Kendrell Wilson Jr with three points and Duke Smith and Le/Marcus Milhouse with two points each.

The Saints got off to a quick start taking an 18-6 lead after the first quarter. Selma extended the lead once again in the second quarter to take a 31-15 halftime lead.

Selma put the game out of reach with a 19-8 advantage in the third quarter to take a commanding 50-23 lead and then edging the Panthers 8-7 in the final stanza.

Selma opened area play on Tuesday night on the road at Montevallo. Heading into area play, Rembert wanted to see where his team was.

“Well, we actually took this game as a measuring stick for ourselves,” Rembert said. “These games always take on their own personalities. They’re very intense. They’re very competitive. And our guys were able to step up tonight, match the intensity and even take it to another level. They played great together. They played connected out there. They played for one another, and they were able to get us to win on today,” Rembert said.

Selma girls 56, Southside 15

The Lady Saints took a big lead early on and didn’t look back as they cruised to a 41-point win over rival Southside.

Jykierra Oliver led the Lady Saints with 17 points while Nicole Holloway scored 11 points and McKenzie Carter added 10 points. Rod’Neisha Parker had eight points followed by Safiya White with six points, ShaMiya Blake with four points, K Wilson with three points and Brooklyn Scott with two points.

Southside was led by A. Carter with seven points followed by N. Gipson and K. Montgomery with three points each and B. Moore with two points
