Dallas County residents may have some travel issues early Friday morning as a strong weather system moves into the area.
Hunter Robinson, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Birmingham, said on Tuesday there is a chance the area could experience snow or freezing rain between midnight and 8 a.m. Friday.
“The ground will be pretty cold already, so there’s a good chance that whatever falls in the early morning hours will stick whether it’s snow or freezing rain,” Robinson said. “By around 8 a.m., it should warm up enough that it should change over to rain, and there shouldn’t be any issues the rest of the day.”
Temperatures on Friday are predicted to begin below freezing, but they will rise to near 40 degrees for the high. However, Robinson said it is something residents may need to watch closely over the next couple of days.
“We are kind of right on the border between being all rain and possibly having some issues with snow and ice,” Robinson said. “A degree or two could make a big difference in a storm like this. We are going to have to watch and see how this evolves over the next couple of days.”
Areas where winter weather is likely would be over North Alabama from Blount County northward, where driving conditions could be hazardous. Areas from Greene County northward could see some icing on bridges and overpasses, but that area could shift southward depending on how the system moves.
By Saturday, sun returns, and any leftover moisture on roads would likely evaporate before it could freeze that night, Satterwhite said.
