It’s been 10 days since the horrific tragedy happened in New Orleans that took the lives of many including two Alabama graduates, Kareem Badawi and Drew Dauphin.
The terror attack happened on New Year’s Day on Bourbon Street around 3:15 a.m.
On Monday, Gov. Kay Ivey joined Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry in their state’s period of mourning for all the victims of the New Year’s Day terrorist attack including the two students with Alabama connections.
Kareem Badawi was a freshman at the University of Alabama who tragically passed away as a result of the attack.
Drew Dauphin, an Auburn University graduate who was also an auto engineer, was also tragically killed in the horrific terrorist attack that happened Jan. 1.
Along with Ivey joining Landry in solidarity in honor of those who tragically passed away during the attack, she also commemorated and remembered the lives lost by commanding that all flags across the state be placed at half-staff and in doing so, Ivey proclaimed Jan. 6 as the day of mourning for Badawi and Wednesday, Jan. 8 as a day of mourning for Dauphin for the state of Alabama.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation said an individual drove a pickup truck into a crowd of people, early that morning on Bourbon street in New Orleans, killing at least 10 and injuring dozens of others. After hitting the crowd, the FBI said a male exited the vehicle and fired a weapon upon the New Orleans Police and when authorities returned fire, the male was pronounced dead at the scene.
The armed male of the attack has been identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, who is a U.S. citizen from Texas. Authorities said he was driving a Ford pickup truck, which appears to have been rented, and the FBI said they are still working to determine if the deceased attacker has potential associations and affiliations with terrorist organizations.
Ivey said within the proclamation that in Alabama, we support one another, remain strong in the wake of tragedy and unite during times of need.
