Dallas County Commission recognizes ‘Senior Scholar’

On Monday, The Dallas County Commission discussed new and old business regarding the city including the academic success of Galvin Hewston, who is an active senior at Morgan Academy in Selma.
Hewston has so many accomplishments that were recognized at Monday’s meeting held by Dallas County Probate Judge and Chairman of the commission, Jimmy Nunn from having a GPA of 4.19 and a score of 32 on the ACT.
Hewston also has been selected as one of the only two students from Alabama to go to Washington, D.C. in March between the 1st and the 8th for an entire week to be with the cabinet members of the White House and the president of the United States for a United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP) that is considered very competitive and challenging to obtain.
The program gives school age students like Hewston including those students interested in government who are selected a chance to participate and have the possibility of a more- depth look on what having a career in government could possibly look like, according to Nunn.
Nunn told Hewston that he has truly done a great job and said that this opportunity is great for him and that he is very deserving of this. In doing so, Nunn read Hewston, his very own proclamation that he was able to take home, entailing every one of his achievements leading up to his most recent accolade in Washington D.C.
“This proclamation is being given to Galvin Hewston, an incredible and remarkable student whereas Hewston is a senior and attends Morgan Academy in Selma within Dallas County, Alabama with being enrolled in the dual enrollment program at Wallace Community College. Hewston is also an exceptional student who has consistently demonstrated an extraordinary level of academic excellence with a remarkable 4.19 GPA and a 32 ACT score, ranking number 1 in his class of numerous honors, but not limited to the Rotary Club Leadership Award, a Creative Writing Award, the Voice of Democracy Award along with being selected for the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Award.”
Nunn said Hewston is a member of National Honor Society of Schools, the BETA club and he is also representing Morgan Academy in Dallas County Mock Trial and his consistent success as an academic winner for the ASIA State Scholars Bowl for two years is further evidence of his exceptional abilities.
“Whereas, in addition to Hewston academic and leadership pursuance, his dedication to service is equally impressive. He has volunteered with the Selma tornado relief, the Selma Food Pantry, Bloch Park Cleanup, The Cozy Dog fundraiser for the Rotary Club and The Salvation Army ‘Ring The Bell’ program, whereas being recommended by Morgan Academy’s Headmaster, Dr. Brian Oliver and the Director of Instruction.”
Nunn told Hewston that the Dallas County Commission along with the citizens of Dallas County are proud and honored to have him represent the State of Alabama in Washington, D.C. and the United States Senate Program.
“We are so proud of you and your academic and leadership sorts and your commitment, dedication and contributions to this community,” Nunn said.
Hewston told the commission that he wants to thank his parents for always supporting him and providing him with the resources to succeed and that he also wanted to thank the Dallas County Commission for inviting him there for the recognition and he also said a special message for his school and the community that he calls home.
“I want to thank all my teachers at school and Ms. Oaks for supporting me and my educational pursuits and I just want to thank everyone and Selma and Dallas County for making the city such a dynamic place to live and making it such a great place to be from. It’s the characteristics of Selma that really help you achieve success.”
