David McCormack, CEO of Vaughan Regional Medical Center (VRMC) since 2016, announced Friday, Jan. 31, that he will retire from his position during the first quarter of 2025.

The timing of his departure will be determined based on the recruiting of the hospital’s next CEO.

“I’ve been a hospital CEO for most of my career – most of my life, for that matter,” McCormack said. “You build incredible relationships and are part of some amazing experiences over that time. I’ve truly enjoyed the nine-plus years I’ve spent at Vaughan Regional serving the Selma area. It’s not easy to walk away from such a wonderful place, but I take comfort in knowing that the hospital is in good hands with our incredible team of skilled, compassionate caregivers, and the strong partnership we enjoy with our local community.”

During McCormack’s tenure at Vaughan Regional, the hospital achieved success in quality of care, employee satisfaction, and financial performance. He helped recruit numerous providers to the hospital so that it could offer, expand, or restart (as was the case with oncology) services vital to the Selma area.

The hospital also opened new clinics or added technologies to create better access to important types of care. These include a wound care clinic in 2020, a new catheterization lab in 2022, an outpatient dialysis clinic (Vaughan Kidney Care) in 2024, and a new primary care and urgent care center in 2024.

“Under David’s leadership, Vaughan continues to adapt its services to best meet the changing needs of the local community,” said Russell Pigg, President of the Community Hospital division at ScionHealth, VRMC’s parent company. “David viewed areas where a particular type of care might be underserved as an opportunity for Vaughan to provide a solution, and more often than not, that came to fruition. We appreciate his leadership over the years and congratulate him on a well-earned retirement.”

The search for a new CEO is currently underway and expected to conclude over the next several weeks.

Vaughan Regional Medical Center is a sole community provider hospital located in historic Selma, Alabama. The 175-bed Joint Commission-accredited facility employs more than 600 people.
