While live Christmas trees brighten up the home, they can present a problem when the holidays have ended.

Fortunately, the city of Selma is making it easy for families to dispose of their used Christmas trees.

According to Greg Bjelke, chairman of the Public Works Committee, the city will collect trees at the landfill, 4445 Water Ave., and at Four Seasons Garden Center, 611 Cahaba Road.

“The trees will be chipped up and used for mulch, or fuel at a local mill, or simply reduced in size before they enter the landfill,” he said. “This recycle effort will help the city reduce the amount of debris on the streets and help with an already heavy workload.”

The city landfill will begin accepting trees Tuesday, Dec. 27 through Friday, Dec. 30. From 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day schedule will be the same.

Four Seasons will accept trees Tuesday, Dec. 27 through Friday Dec. 30 and again on Tuesday, Jan. 3.

Bjelke reminded everyone the trees should be cleared of ornaments, lights and other foreign materials.
