For more than two months, Nakeshia Smith has had to sit back and wonder if the person who attacked her in early October would ever be caught.
Tuesday, officers with the Selma Police Department took Sherilyn Bunch, 34 of Valley Grande, into custody and charged her in connection with the October assault that left Smith with cuts to her throat, face and head.
“At this point, the suspect has denied any involvement,” Selma Chief of Police William T. Riley said Wednesday. “However, we feel the weapon used in the attack was a knife or a box cutter.”
According to Riley, Smith reported to the department she was assaulted by a white female in the area of L.L. Anderson and Tremont Street on Oct. 2. Smith told police she did know the identity of the suspect, however she was able to provide the police with some additional information.
“Through further investigation, we identified Bunch as the suspect,” Riley said. “Bunch was arrested on Tuesday and charged with second-degree assault.”
After her arrest, Bunch was placed in the Dallas County Jail under a $15,000 bond.
Riley said Smith received “numerous sutures from the attack at a local hospital.”
“The wounds were not life threatening, however due to injuries, infections are always possible,” Riley said.
