Keep the spirit of giving alive

For the last month, the people of Selma and Dallas County have been in a giving mood.
Charities and organizations from all over have benefited tremendously from the generous donations of others.
Every Salvation Army Angel was adopted, and several other organizations did their part to ensure every child in our area has a Merry Christmas.
Unfortunately, when the holidays end, many people forget about these charities and tighten their wallets once again. But the need does not end with Christmas.
The Black Belt is one of the most economically depressed areas of the state and nation. People here need help all year long. Poverty and hunger know no seasons.
Children will still need school supplies, clothing, food and shelter. Those who are out of work will still need someone to help them make ends meet until they find employment. These needs don’t go away on Dec. 26.
When 2012 rolls around, make a New Year’s resolution to adopt one of our many local charities. There are plenty who will work through local employers to establish payroll deduction donations.
If you do not wish to make monetary donations, volunteer manpower by helping these charities in their mission.
Make the vow to make a difference the other 11 months of the year and do your part to make Selma a better place.
