An unidentified, 29-year-old Birmingham woman was shot while walking out of a Selma funeral home yesterday.
The woman was shot in the arm when a fight started outside Miller Funeral Home, just off Jeff Davis Avenue.
“It appears she was struck one time,” Interim Selma Police Chief James Martin said. “It doesn’t appear to be life threatening,”
According to Martin, the incident occurred at around 3 p.m. yesterday.
At least three males were fighting at nearby George Washington Carver Homes and started shooting, Martin said.
“She was just a bystander that was shot,” he said.
Martin said suspects maybe arrested soon.
“Three males were involved in the shooting,” Martin said. “Right now the suspects haven’t been positively identified. We don’t have anyone in custody.”
Martin said detectives are currently investigating the case and that witnesses described the suspects.
Martin wasn’t able to provide the identity of the victim as of presstime.
Funeral home officials couldn’t remember the victim’s name, but they did say she was in the home to make arrangements for her mother, Dorothy Johnson.
Randall Miller of Miller Funeral Home couldn’t remember the woman’s name either.
“She was a Johnson,” he said.
According to Miller Funeral Home Director Theo Neely, the woman lost a good deal of blood.
He agreed with Martin’s statement, and said she wasn’t involved in the fight at GWC Homes.
“The lady was in here making arrangements for her mother and she went outside and somebody shot her,” he said. “The bullet wasn’t meant for her.”
Funeral home directors said the shooting didn’t damage the building.
