Nellie Rambo Northcutt
Nellie Rambo Northcutt, 86, of Selma died Sunday February 13, 2005, at a local hospital. Funeral services were held in Blytheville, Arkansas.
Survivors include her daughter, Doris N Hankwitz of Selma; four brothers, M.D. Rambo of California, J.W. Rambo of Missouri, R.H. Rambo of Illinois, Harry Rambo of Texas; and one sister, Dorothy R. Russell of Blytheville, Ark..
Leroy Peterson, Sr.
Leroy Peterson, Sr., 86, of Selma, died Feb. 17, 2005, at a local hospital.
Funeral Services are scheduled for Saturday, February 26, 2005 at 11:00AM from Greater St. Paul Baptist Church with Rev. J.C. Summers officiating.
Burial will follow in Pineview Memorial Gardens, with J.H. Williams & Sons Funeral Home directing.
Survivors include a loving and devoted wife of 65 years, Josephine J. Peterson; five children, Leroy, Jr. (Los Angeles), Susie (Selma), Ben (Los Angeles), Christopher (Los Angeles), and James (Los Angeles); a brother, Elijah Singley (Chicago); two brothers-in-law, three sisters-in-law; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren and a host of other very close relatives and friends.
“Jack” as he was affectionately called was born on January 24, 1919 to the late Ruby Lee Peterson and the late Dan Singley in Greensboro, Alabama.
He confessed Christ at an early age and later joined the Greater St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.
He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army having served his country during WWII.
Arthur Harris Jr.
Arthur Harris Jr., 60, of Chicago, Ill., died Sunday, February 13, 2005 in Chicago, Ill.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 23, at the Chapel of Miller Funeral Home in Marion, with the Rev. Carlton Hogue officiating. Burial will follow in Poplar Grove Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.
Active pallbearers will be friends of the family.
Willie Jordan Jr.
Willie Jordan Jr., 78, of Dallas County, died Friday, February 18, 2005 in Selma.
Services will be held at 12 noon Saturday, February 26, at the Chapel of Lewis Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. Joshua Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery with Lewis Brothers Funeral Home directing.
Survivors include is wife, Susie M. Jordan; seven sons, Sylvester Jordan of Selma, Cedric J. (Judy) Jordan, Anthony (Nacy) Jordan of Selma, Donzell (Cyd) Jordan of Portsmouth, Va., Barry(Wanda)Jordan of Clarksville, Tenn., and Ignatius (Barbara) Jordan of Honolulu; one sister, Elizabeth Bennette of Albuquerque, N.M.; 22 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; five daughters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Active pallbearers are sons.
Honorary pallbearers are Deacons of Shiloh Baptist Church.
The body will lie in state at the church on Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 12 noon.
Mr. Jordan was a Baptist. He served in the United State Army for two years. In 1980 received a career service award in recognition of the completion of 35 years of service in the government of the United States of America.
Eliza Brown
Eliza Brown, 94, of Autaugaville, died Saturday, February 19, 2005.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Miller Funeral Home.
Velma Greenfield Cunningham
Velma Creenfield Cunningham (Mrs. Joseph N.), of Marion, died on Monday, February 21, 2005, at a Selma hospital
Mrs. Cunningham was born on November 27. 1908, in Woodbine, Iowa. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Perry Greenfield. She attended college at, the University of Iowa in Iowa City, where she earned the Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degree in English, speech and drama. While at the University. she was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority.
After nine years of teaching in the public schools of Iowa, Mrs. Cunningham came to Marion in the fall of 1937 to teach English, speech, and drama at Judson College.
On June 10, 1938, she married Col. Joseph Newton Cunningham, professor at Marion Military Institute.
For 30 1/2
years she taught at Judson College. There she also served as head of the English department and Chair of the Humanities Division. Upon her retirement in 1974, he received the Algernon Sidney Sullivan Award, a medallion, and was named Professor Emeritus at Judson College.
She is survived by her two sons, of New York City and their families: Joseph N. Cunninghan, M.D. and his wife Bonnie, daughters, Teresa Korn, Stephanie Tower, Lori, Jessica and Gaynor, and son, Joseph Daniel and Richard B. Cunningham and his wife Christine and daughters Lillian and Eleanor.
Services will be held on Thursday, February 24, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Wilfrid’a Episcopal Church in Marion, with the Rev. Dr. Daniel Ingram Thornton officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1O:O0 – 11:00 in The Parish Room at St. Wilfrid’s before the service.
