Selma Police Officer Jimmy Crowe is resting at home today after being injured in an attempt to arrest a man who crashed through a window at the Highland Avenue Mr. Waffle.

The incident occurred early Wednesday morning after Crowe responded to a call about a man cursing and beating a window on the north side of the restaurant, according to Assistant Chief Jimmy Martin.

Witnesses told police the suspect attempted to steal a cash register before jumping through the window.

When Crowe arrived on the scene, the suspect charged at him and a struggle ensued.

“A civilian provided assistance to (Crowe) until other officers arrived on the scene,” Martin said.

Crowe was later transported to Vaughan Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Martin said the officer underwent surgery and is now in good condition.

The suspect, who was not identified, was also taken to the hospital for treatment of several cuts caused by the shattered window glass.

“The suspect is in the intensive care unit of the hospital,” Martin said. “After he has surgery and is recovered, an arrest will be made.”

Martin said the suspect is facing charges for attacking an officer, damaging the restaurant and attempting to steal the cash register.

Martin said he has not seen the test results indicating whether the suspect was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

“I really want to commend the Selma citizen for coming to the aid of (Crowe),” Martin said. “The situation could have been a lot worse if this person had not stepped in. There are not too many people that will come out to help.”

Martin-who did not release the citizen’s name-said he would be sending the citizen a letter thanking him for helping the officer.
