A Selma man was arrested Thursday after police found him hiding in a closet in a Weaver Street residence during a botched burglary attempt.

Melvin Ford, 40, of Selma, faces charges of burglary, domestic violence, resisting arrest and assault after he allegedly broke into a home in the 1600 block of Weaver Street and made threats to the residents inside.

Selma Police Assistant Chief Jimmy Martin said police were called to the scene around 9:20 p.m. and discovered the back door window had been broken.

Martin said the intruder, who was known to the victims, apparently cut his hand in his attempt to gain entrance into the home.

“When police arrived, the intruder ran to the back of the resident and hid in a closet,” Martin said. “Officers found him bleeding from the cuts to his hand and he also had a knife beside him.”

Martin said officers took the suspect into custody after a brief struggle.

Ford was transported to the Vaughan Regional Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. He was later taken to the Dallas County Jail under a $4,000 bond.

The residents inside the home were not injured during the incident, Martin said.
