The recovery of a body near the old drag strip in Dallas County led to the arrest of a Selma man.
Tuesday afternoon Carl Brown, 19, of Selma, was taken into custody by the Dallas County Sheriff’s Deputies and charged with theft of property first degree, six counts of fraudulent use of a credit card and capital murder.
Brown is being held at the Dallas County Jail with no bond for the Sunday murder of Clanton resident Julius Collins Burnett.
The body of Burnett, 47, was discovered on County Road 74 by property owners who were putting up a fence.
Dallas County Sheriff Harris Huffman said the pieces of the puzzle began to come together when his department began trading information with the Clanton Police Department.
“They had a missing person, and their detectives came and met with our investigators,” he said. “It was determined their missing person and our person were in fact, the same person. He was reported missing by his sister Tuesday.”
Huffman said law enforcement agencies began tracking the use of the victim’s credit cards and discovered cash had been withdrawn from a local ATM. Brown’s photo was taken several times, and one of the Dallas County investigators recognized him.
Late Tuesday afternoon, one of the investigators saw Burnett’s stolen green Mazda Tribute on Luker Circle.
The driver, Brown, had the victim’s credit card in his pocket.
During an interview, Huffman said Brown confessed to the murder and is the only suspect.
Huffman said he believes Brown and the victim met on the Internet and arranged a meeting, which eventually led to the shooting. The department is currently trying to recover Brown’s computer. The victim’s computer was in his vehicle.
Huffman said he doesn’t expect to make any more arrests in the case. He also said he was pleased with the speed with which an arrest was made.
“With the cooperation of the Clanton Police Department and our investigators working hand in hand we were able to make what I consider a pretty fast arrest,” he said.
Burnett was shot twice in the head with a handgun, however, Brown said he threw the weapon in the river, so authorities were unable to recover the pistol.
A bond hearing for Brown has not been scheduled, but could be early next week.
