As winter will soon turn to spring, local youth will soon trade in their sneakers and gym shorts for a cap and glove.

Registration for the 2012 Selma Recreation baseball and softball league begins Monday, Jan. 9.

Registrations will be taken at the recreation department office at Memorial Stadium Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and those looking to register, including those who played last year, must pay a $10 registration fee and bring a form of identification that includes the date of birth for the individual looking to play.

Tracy Williams with Selma Parks and Recreation said another great season is expected after last season, which included over 1,000 participants and a number of firsts.

“I think it went exceptionally well last year,” Williams said. “It was the first year we’ve had 9 and 10-year-old all stars in the boys, 11 and 12-year-old all stars in the boys in a long time—probably better than 25 years. Last year was the first year we had any all-star play for the girls at all.”

Registrations will also be taken from 8:30 a.m. to noon on each Saturday in January starting on Jan. 14 and the first two Saturdays in February—Feb. 4 and Feb. 11.

Tryouts will begin Monday, Feb. 20 and participants must be registered before then.

The leagues will have teams ranging from age 5 to 18 years old for boys and girls.

Parents registering their child are not required to have the child present for registration, but will need to provide a shirt size for the child.

“Each team, we give them a cap, or a visor for girls, and a uniform jersey,” Williams said. “The kids have to buy their own pants and socks.”

Williams said the baseball and softball leagues are good because they give participants something fun and positive to do over the summer

“It’s not just the fundamentals of baseball and softball,” Williams said.

“They’re practicing two or three times a week, playing two or three times a week. It gives them activities during the summer, keeps them busy, and gives them some structure in their life. It’s just good, clean fun for them.”
