Morgan Academy coach David Walker’s ability to rest his starters Monday night paid off Tuesday.
The Senators came in one day after beating Autauga Academy and trounced the Meadowview Christian School Trojans, 72-40 at the Morgan Academy gym.
Walker’s subsituting Monday night kept the Senators rested and able to run against the Trojans.
“We probably played the best game tonight we have all year,” Walker said. “It always seems to happy against (MCS coach Rick) Raines.”
Along with their aggressive play, the Senators also continued their long-range shooting. After hitting just two outside shots against Autauga Academy, Morgan sank several perimeter buckets against MCS.
Reid Buster drained consecutive
baseline jumpers early in the third period to push Morgan’s lead to 38-24. Ben Callaway sank a three-pointer from the top of the key to make it a 50-26 game.
The game also was marred by four technical fouls. The first was whistled on Buster, who hung on to the rim following a dunk in the first quarter.
The more serious technicals came in the fourth quarter, following a collision between MCS’s Derek Lassiter and Morgan’s Allen Pitts, both of whom were battling for a loose ball at midcourt. After a brief struggle, Lassiter got to his feet and was pushed away from a possible confrontation with Pitts by a teammate.
After being whistled for the foul, Lassiter was whistled for the first technical for what the referees deemed inappropriate language. Lassiter stormed out of the gym toward the locker room, forcing officials to call another technical.
Raines argued the foul call with the officials and he was called for yet another technical foul.
Despite Lassiter’s two technical fouls, Raines said his player would be available for Friday night’s game.
