A woman found dead after a fire damaged a St. Philip Street home has been identified as 57-year-old Laura M. Lyons, County Coroner Alan Dailey said.
Lyons was found after the house fire was put out early Sunday morning by the Selma Fire Department.
“The preliminary report shows she died of heat and smoke inhalation,” Dailey said.
Lyons was found in a bedroom as Selma firefighters searched the home.
At 1:35 a.m., the department was dispatched to 607 St. Phillips Street. On the way, they received a radio call warning that someone might be in the home.
Another victim managed to escape he fire.
Mathew Smith, 43, made it to the back door of the home, despite the smoke and heat, where he was rescued, Battalion Chief Andy Dearman said.
He was transported to Vaughan Regional Medical Center by Haynes ambulance, and later to a Birmingham hospital where he was treated for burns and smoke inhalation, Dearman said.
The fire originated in the living room of the home, Dearman said. Arson is not suspected.
“It was just superheated in there,” Dearman said. “Anybody that was in there, the smoke and the heat would overtake (them).”
Information on what caused the fire was unavailable by presstime.
