Cindy Dailey says everybody should have healthy children.
“I don’t have a heartbreaking story,” she said. “I have wonderful, healthy children. I just think everyone should.”
To make sure more people have healthy children, Dailey is leading this year’s March of Dimes efforts in Dallas County.
Daily, with the help of co-worker Crystal Massey, led Bushog to become the largest fundraiser at last year’s event, raising $9,500 for the March of Dimes.
A total of $36,000 was raised for the March of Dimes last year, a record-breaking amount for Dallas County.
“We just picked that as one of our leading charities,” Dailey said.
Dailey says she’s taking on a lot of work with this year’s March.
The organization’s goal is to raise $42,000 this year.
Dailey said she believes it’s an achievable goal.
Last year, Dailey said the project got a late start.
“We probably didn’t have three weeks lead time by
the time we took on the project,” she said.
This year, they’re starting a little earlier.
Kick-off is planned for January 25 at Shoney’s on Highway 14.
Rusty Wallace, of the state March of Dimes program, said the event is a chance for companies and individuals to get involved before the April 9 march.
The kick-off starts at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 8:30 a.m.
Wallace said with Selma’s reputation, the increased goal for the area was a given. “The way people in Selma do it’s doable,” he said of the city’s capacity for charity.
Ultimately, Wallace just wants to see more healthy children born, too.
“We’ve (The March of Dimes) got a $75 million, five-year campaign,” he said. “We’re trying to figure out what causes premature birth and how to stop it.”
