School construction on schedule

When construction began on the new Selma High School, moving in after spring break of 2012 was a possibility.
Though it could still happen, Volkert and Associates representative Jonathan Grammer said students will most likely be in the new building to begin the 2012-13 school year in August.
Selma City School Board president Henry Hicks said he discussed the project with Grammer and understood the project will most likely be completed over the summer.
“We had been talking about looking at going in during spring break, but now I understand it might be better to look at after school closes,” he said. “That gives you an opportunity to go through and fix anything.”
The project is on schedule, Grammer said, but moving in over the summer would be the best option.
“Most likely, with the way the schedule is running right now, we probably won’t be able to take the new school until the summer,” he said. “That will give us more time to move in and move all of the teachers and administration over. The way the schedule is looking, and to make sure everything is right, it’s going to be best to make the move over during summer break.”
Of course, Grammer said, the move depends on when the project is complete.
“I fully expect it will be summer,” he said.
As of Tuesday, Grammer said the project is at the midway point.
“We’re a little bit more than 50 percent done with that project, approaching 60 percent,” he said. “The schedule right now is toward the end of March. We’re working on the A and B building, which is the two gymnasiums and the ROTC and coaches’ area.”
Construction crews are currently working on the cafeteria area.
“We’ve got the structure up and we are closing in on the south end of the building with the new auditorium,” he said. “We’ve got all of the two-story area up, so we’re fast approaching getting the entire building closed in and we can start working on the interior.”
Most importantly, Grammer said the project has remained on target as far as the budget is concerned. There have been no change orders to date.
“Everything is going well, everything looks good so far,” he said.
“We’re just trying to make sure we stay on schedule and have it ready to open next August.”
