Despite efforts, Lady Saints lose

Junior Shemeka Simpson scored 15 points, picked up five steals and the Selma High Lady Saints (4-2, 1-1 area) were still beaten by the Jeff Davis Lady Vols Friday.

The Lady Vols started their new sophomore center, 6’8″ Cassie Moore, but the night belonged to Brittany Thomas, as she scored 22 points, 11 in the first quarter alone. The Lady Vols jumped to a 6-0 lead in the first, forcing a time-out from Selma.

Coach Harris called on Freshman Gabrielle Goudy, who held Moore scoreless in the first three quarters.

“We have four returning starters and no one has stepped up to their game,” Harris said. “Goudy is the only player that is hungry, but we will grow from this loss and get better.”

At the 3:12 mark, Simpson was fouled behind the three-point line and hit 2-of-3. Simpson picked up another steal and tied the score 10-all, but Jeff Davis’ Thomas hit two at the buzzer to end the quarter 12-10.

Ashley Green’s 11 points and five rebounds put Selma ahead with a three, 13-12, but Jeff Davis went on a run and scored 13 in the quarter to end the half 25-18.

Jeff Davis’ Ashley Barnes opened the third with a 15-foot jumper and Simpson answered with a three to cut the lead to 25-21. The Lady Saints ended the third down 39-36. In the fourth, Moore scored 6 and the Lady Saints couldn’t make a run and lost their second game of the young season. Erick Lumpkin contributed to the losing effort with 11 points and six rebounds.
