Here comes Santa Claus

Everyone from Santa Claus to the dude in the Christmas sombrero turned out Saturday morning for the annual Selma Christmas parade.

As Selmians lined a chilly Broad Street, several marching bands, plenty of waving hands and lots of smiles, greeted them.

Organized by Centre for Commerce, the annual parade featured churches, civic organizations and local businesses helping raise some Christmas cheer in Selma.

“Everybody had a good time,” Chamber of Commerce Director Claire Twardy said. Twardy was one of the organizers of the events. “With the cold weather, it felt like Christmas time,” she said.

Many local businesses, organizations and individuals participated in the parade. Twardy said 125 participants were involved.

But parade officials saved the best for last.

After the colorful floats, fancy cars and some of Selma’s best horsemen and women, Santa arrived.

Santa left the reindeer at home and drove through Selma atop a bright red fire engine from the Pottersville VFD.

It was the highlight of the day for many of Selma’s smallest citizens who cheered with delight as the man in the bright red suit rode down Broad Street.

Twardy said that despite the difficulty, she hopes the Chamber can continue to be a part of the parade.

“(We) hope to continue next year,” she said. “I want to try to work with other groups to make it continue. It’s a great community event and people consider it the start of Christmas.”
