The Southside Panthers improved to 6-0 with a workman-like 64-49 win over Calhoun Friday night.

Coach Velton Robinson’s Panthers were efficient all night as the inside-outside duo of Jeffrey Anderson and Jamarcus Hardy combined for 20 first-half points.

The Panthers mixed numerous half-court defenses with their ferocious full-court press and vaulted to a 32-25 halftime advantage.

Sophomore point guard Fontano Watters ignited the Panthers and the home crowd by sandwiching a foul-line jumper between two long three-pointers.

Deonte’ Williams, the Panthers’ leading scorer, had a putback and Watters fed Travis Shine for another three-pointer, pushing the Panthers ahead 47-28 midway through the third period.

Robinson emptied his bench at this point and everyone on the squad scored in the winning effort.

“Our kids were focused.

Though I know they were thinking of Selma High, they took care of business,” Robinson said.

Anderson led all scorers with 14 points. Williams doubled up with 13 points and 10 boards while Watters and Hardy tallied 11 and eight points, respectively.
