A man brandishing a firearm in front of students at Selma High School Wednesday morning was arrested according to the Selma Police Department.

There were no shots fired and no one was hurt in the incident which occurred at approximately 7:35 a.m. as students arrived at the school.

One student eyewitness said she was waiting outside for the bell to ring when a man in a van, later identified as Terrell Edward Malone, 21, of 714 Second Ave., pulled up on the grass on the side of the building and began yelling and waving a gun.

The witness said students waiting nearby ran for cover while the driver continued to scream at them.

Police later arrested Malone who was accompanied by a 16-year-old male.

A statement from the school says that the authorities were called and principal Joe Peterson spoke with the occupants of the van asking them to leave the premises, which they did immediately.

News of the incident spread quickly and parents began arriving to check their children out of school fearing for their safety.

Sarah Rome, whose son is a student at Selma High was one of the parents anxious to get her child out of school early.

She said she received a call from a family member that said that there was a shooting at the school that morning.

“My aunt called and told me that they were shooting up at Selma high,” said Rome. “Then my son called and said they were talking about coming back and shooting after school so I came to get him.”

Police chief Robert Green was at the school at the time of the incident and was one of the officers who pursued the suspect.

According to the chief, he and other officers in the area got the call and started after the suspect who was apprehended at Church St.. and 5th Ave.

After questioning, the suspect revealed to the police that he was at the school looking for a person who allegedly shot at his vehicle the night before.

The police searched the vehicle and recovered a .380-Caliber pistol and a kitchen knife. The suspect was arrested and charged with not having a license to carry a pistol in a vehicle, which is a misdemeanor, and noise violation based on an outstanding warrant. Malone also had a 16-year old male in the car with him that released to his parents.

Green said the incident could be related to the shooting of two teenage boys last week on Bienville and 4th and the arson reported Monday night on Voeglin Ave.

“We are aggressively investigating these cases,” said Green. “We have several investigators assigned.”
