The service was conducted by her uncle, Salvation Army Capt. Bill Criss of Prince Georges County, Md., and his uncle, Salvation Army Dan New of Austin, Texas.

A reception was held at the church following the marriage ceremony.

Capt. Kelley New began her duties in Selma on Aug. 26.

She said that her duties, while still not finally determined, will include women’s ministries in the Salvation Army church and in the community, youth and senior citizens ministries

and also assisting with the thrift stores in Selma and Demopolis.

“I’ll also be doing the Salvation Army Angel Tree project in December,” she said. “Donald will be in charge of the kettles operation,” she added.

“I’m very glad to be in Selma,” said Kelley New.

“Ordinarily local Salvation Army corps are led by a husband-and-wife team,” she said. “It’s unusual for there only to be one leader, as was the case here before we came,” she said.

The News met while attending the Salvation Army college for officer training in Atlanta. She was in attendance 2001-03 and he 2002-04.

Following her graduation Kelley New was sent to a small Texas town 35 miles north of downtown Dallas named McKinney.

McKinney is in Collin County, which is the fifth fastest-growing county in the nation, she said.

She described her feelings at her college graduation in Atlanta in 2003.

“In the morning we are commissioned as Salvation Army officers and in the afternoon we receive our appointments. No one knows where they will be appointed. I was shocked when I heard I would be going to McKinney, but it turned out to be a good year,” she said.

The News said that they met during their overlapping year at the Atlanta college.
