Super readers made, not born

While Harry Potter and a Series of Unfortunate Events have made millions of children avid readers overnight, it’s still far too rare to find a child that loves books.

Especially one like Erin McCown, who read 101 books this summer.

This child is devouring everything the Selma-Dallas County Public Library can throw at her.

According to librarian Becky Nichols, the child is taking full advantage of everything the library has to offer.

Erin is a fine example of what can be accomplished with a little work and effort. The child reached a goal many adults couldn’t obtain, all because she wanted to.

While we all agree that reading is important, some people don’t devote enough time to reading to their children.

While it may seem time consuming now, the benefits of such action, as Erin shows, will multiply in the future.

We encourage all parents to take time to read to their children, and make sure they go to the Selma-Dallas County Library. On a daily basis, if possible.

The library is available to parents and children, but it won’t be much use if we don’t use it.

Everytime parents check out a book, or escort them to check out a book, they’re helping instill into their children a love of books that will serve them the rest of their lives, in or out of the classroom.
