While a preliminary autopsy report apparently exonerates the police from any charges of brutality, the death of Kirk Edwards, 26, is still a mystery.
Police Chief Robert Green reported at a press conference yesterday that the autopsy hasn’t given a cause for Edwards’ death.
“The cause and manner of death couldn’t be determined until toxicology reports are complete,” Green said. “The cause of death and the manner of death are pending.”
The Selma resident was arrested Friday on a failure to appear warrant in an assault case.
Edwards was transported to the police station by two unidentified officers.
“There was no force involved,” Green said. “He was arrested without incident.”
Green refused to provide the names of the arresting officers.
“I’d rather not give you that information at this particular point in time,” he said. “It’s still a pretty sensitive case right now, a lot of people are upset.”
While he was being processed in the blocking room, police say he had a seizure.
Officers attempted CPR on Edwards until an ambulance arrived.
He was taken to Vaughan Regional Medical
Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Alan Dailey, Dallas County Coroner, examined the body.
“There didn’t seem to be any marks to the body that I could see,” Dailey said in an earlier interview.
The preliminary report agrees with Dailey.
“They (the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences) stated that there were no indications of trauma that would have caused the death of Mr. Edwards,” Green said.
The toxicology report would indicate whether Edwards death would be caused by any poison or chemical he may have ingested or been exposed to.
Police say the report will take 60 to 90 days to complete.
