VALLEY GRANDE —Members of the Valley Grande City Council discussed the city’s budget and future plans of the Overlook Hills sewer project during its regular   meeting Monday.

Selma certified public accountant James E. Siddens presented the council with a city financial report for fiscal year that began Oct. 1, 2010 and ended Sept. 30, 2011.

Siddens said the city’s sales tax saw significant increase.

“Everything’s lining up … a little more, a little less,” Siddens said of the budget. “The real increase was the sales tax; Sales and use tax increased this fiscal year by $133,000 from the year before … mainly (due to) the grocery store (Dave’s Market) … the sale’s tax really jumped up.”

The report showed total assets increased from roughly $1.2 million in September 2010 to $1.65 million by September 2011. Sidden said the council also spent less.

“This is a snapshot of the assets, the liabilities and the equity of the city of the year-end date … you can see the current assets increase from $227,000 to $450,000 this year,” Siddens said. “The reason its such a big increase is the $212,500 grant for the sewer project we’re holding, the money has come in and it’s sitting in the account …”

The amount of increase, Siddens said, also includes restricted funds, or funds that need to be spent in certain ways.
