For Breanna Furlow, one swing of the bat was a culmination from a difficult season turned upside down.
One pitch after fouling off an offering from her coach, Furlow crushed a shot into the right-centerfield gap for a three-run, inside-the-park home run. The blast highlighted a six-run seventh inning for Graystone Restaurant in its 13-7 win over Town and Country Real Estate in the 9-10-year-olds Dixie Youth Softball League championship series Wednesday night at the Sportsplex.
The victory by Graystone Restaurant, which came into the game as the final team in the losers’ bracket, forced a deciding game tonight at 7 p.m.
“Bre’s been advancing all year,” Graystone Restaurant head coach Andy Hewitt said. “She started slow, but she’s worked hard all season. Her hard work culminated in a big hit tonight.”
Furlow’s shot evaded two Town and Country outfielders and rolled to the fence, scoring Karlynn Savage and Kelli Dobbs. With the throw from the outfield making its way to the infield, Furlow rounded third base and never stopped en route to her big hit.
Porsche Miller broke a 7-7 tie when she tripled to lead off the seventh inning and came home when the throw from the outfield eluded the Town and Country third baseman. Phoenicia Reese capped the seventh with a two-run single that plated Betty Moppins and Rebecca Hastings.
Graystone Restaurant had a 7-6 lead with just three outs left to get. But Town and Country knotted the game in the bottom of the sixth inning when Eboni Sanders reached on a throwing error, allowing her to get to third. Kenyada Watts followed with an infield single to score Sanders and make it a 7-7 game.
Town and Country had an opportunity to once again rally in the bottom of the seventh when Kara Rawls singled and went to second on a single by Jonisha Jackson. But Rawls was picked off by third baseman Savage when she rounded second too far.
Graystone took a 1-0 lead in the first when Sarah Frasier tripled and scored on an infield grounder by Shayna Hewitt.
Town and Country grabbed a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the frame on a two-run single from Jackson to plate Rawls and Ashley Allen.
The Town and Country advantage grew to 5-1 in a second inning capped by a two-run single from Allen.
But Graystone rallied with a five-run third inning to take a 6-5 lead. The frame was highlighted by RBI singles by Hewitt and Zannesha Booker along with four Town and Country errors that allowed three other runs to score.
Town and Country tied the game at 6 in the fifth on a single by Jackson and a Graystone fielding error. But Graystone responded by taking the lead in the sixth on a run-scoring single from Watts.
Although his team has grabbed the momentum entering tonight’s deciding game, Hewitt said there is still much to be done.
“We’ve just got to come out and do the same thing,” he said. “A game normally goes six innings. We just have to score more runs than they do.”
