Harvey Callaway Hooks, 68, of Prattville, died Monday, June 7, 2004.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, June 9, at 3 p.m., from the Chapel of Prattville Memorial, with the Rev. Robert Hunnicutt officiating. Mr. Hooks is survived by his beloved spouse, Peggy Hooks, three sons, Donald Hooks, Kevin Hooks and Randall Hooks; two grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and one brother, Kenneth Hooks.

Lou Ellen Nettles Griffin

Lou Ellen Nettles Griffin died June 6, in the Thomasville Infirmary, Thomasville.

Services will be held at the Arlington Methodist Church Tuesday, June 8, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Wilson Kendrick officiating. Burial will follow in the Arlington Methodist Church Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 54 years, William Comer Griffin, her parents, Samuel Cornelius and Janie Maude Rickard Nettles, her brothers, Samuel Cornelius Nettles, William Henry Nettles, Dr. James Dennis Nettles and her sister, Jane Nettles Lavender.

Survivors include three children, William Michael Griffin (Marge) of Fallon, Nev.; Nancy Ellen Griffin Brown (Dan) of Estes Park, Col.; and Emily Jane Griffin Brodeur, Nashville, Tenn.; grandchildren, Mary Jane Griffin Serna Scott, of Daleville; William Phillip Griffin (Aimee), of Copperas Cove, Texas; Also surviving are her sister Mildred Nettles Cook, Clifton; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Active pallbearers will be William Melzar Nettles, Lake City, Fla.; Daniel Bragg Cook, Bakersfield, Calif.; Samuel McPherson Cook, Destin, Fla.; Abe Crum Cook III, Clifton; John Cornelius Nettles, Selma; Thomas Nettles Lavender, Opelika; Samuel Dennis Lavender, Moundville; James Franklin Lavender, Moundville; and Douglas N. Barfield Montgomery.

Mrs. Griffin was born in Arlington on August 18, 1914. She graduated from Pine Hill High as valedictorian and received her college degree Magna Cum Laude in math with a minor in English from Birmingham-Southern in 1933. She taught schools for many years in Alabama, West Virginia, Virginia and Washington. She was a member of the Honorary Chemistry Society in College, Alpha Gamma Delta teaching society, the American Association of University Women, the Arlington Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, the Alabama Charter Chapter # 36, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Friday Afternoon Club and former officer of the Wilcox Historical Society.

The family would especially like to thank Shirley Sheffield and Lyda McBryde for their kind and loving care over the past eight years, as well as Early Sheffield, Sharon Sheffield, Jullian McBryde, Dr. Frank Dozier and the staff of the Thomasville Infirmary.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the United Methodist Children’s Home or a charity of the donor’s choice.
