The Selma Art Guild celebrated the tenth anniversary of their Selma Avenue gallery this weekend with a special reception open to the public.

Jo Taylor, Guild co-president, said the Hohenberg family donated the gallery home to the Guild in 1994.

“Jackie Lord was president of the Art Guild then, and she worked for the Hohenberg’s company,” Taylor said. “They donated the house to the guild through Jackie.”

With the gallery’s establishment, many of Selma’s talented artists had a local place to showcase their work and make them available for public purchase.

“We were really pleased to be able to have a gallery to show our work” Taylor said. “Selma has good local artists, and this is a place where everybody can come by and see what they had to offer.”

At the reception, which took place on Sunday, guests viewed new artwork from at least 12 local artists.

“We have a wide range of watercolor paintings, acrylics, oil paintings, and pottery,” Taylor said

There were also some unique photographs of Selma and Washington, D.C. on display, as well as tiles and Christmas balls decorated with scenes from the city.

The reception was considered a community-wide event, Taylor said, and Guild members were hoping for a large attendance so the community could view their work.

Refreshments were served, and Taylor added that all the artwork on display is for sell.

Taylor said visitors to the gallery should expect to find pieces from their favorite local artists, along with a few from new Guild members.

The gallery, located at 508 Selma Avenue, has served as a perfect setting for many artists to display their work and get the kind of exposure they otherwise may not have.

The Guild will also soon be hosting a fund drive in hopes of having more citizens contribute to Selma’s art.
