During their monthly meeting Monday evening, the Dallas County School Board took time to recognize Southside High School girl’s basketball team for their excellent season this year and accomplishment of making it to the state finals.

Superintendent Wayne May presented each team member, along with their coach, with a special plaque commemorating their efforts.

“We wanted to spotlight the Southside High Ladies for the success they brought back to Southside,” May said. “Though they didn’t win, we are mighty proud of their accomplishments. These young ladies should hold their heads high.”

Coach Matthews Williams said his team worked hard all season, and believes making it to the finals has inspired the girls to do even better next year.

“The coaching staff is really proud of these young ladies and the effort they put into the season,” said Williams. “I tell the girls that work is divided into force times distance. It’s all about work and getting out of your comfort zone. Hard work is just part of paying the price for success.”

Once the congratulations were over, the school board got down to business.

The board was given several first readings of policy changes or additions that need to be set in place, including the Student HIV policy and Instructional Support policy.

The board then approved a list of textbooks submitted by the school system’s textbook committee for use in classrooms next year.

Dr. V.C. Larkin, head of the textbook committee, said the 30-member committee was composed of teachers, administrators, and community representatives.

“We had to find textbooks that met state criteria,” Larkin told the board members. “All of the ones we chose are found on the state adoption list for grades K-12.”

The next item on the agenda approved by the board was the Southside High seniors trip to Orlando, Fla. from April 29 to May 2.

Personnel matters, including a request for military leave and a resignation, were also accepted by the board.

Other items on the agenda included:

Frances Hobbs Cole was granted permission to speak to the board about a personal matter regarding one of its employees.

First reading of the Food Services Management policy.

First reading of the On-the-job-injury policy.

First reading of the vacation and leave of absences policy.

Vote to enter into executive session.
