Dems qualify for county elections

Democrat candidates have officially lined up, qualifying for the upcoming county elections Friday.
Seven candidate have qualified with the Dallas County Democratic Party to run for the offices of Dallas County Commissioner, Member of the Dallas County Board of Education and Constable.
All candidates had until 5 p.m. Friday to announce their intentions with the Dallas County Republican and Democratic Party.
Attempts to reach Col. Brock Wells, chairman of the Dallas County Republican Party were unsuccessful at the time of publication.
The Selma Times-Journal was able to contact Mark Story, who confirmed he was running for the Republican Party on the Board of Education.
Curtis Williams and the Rev. Daryl Moore are running for County Commissioner in District 3. Larry Carlton Nickles and Kimbrough Ballard are running for County Commission in District 4. William Minor, an incumbent, is running for reelection in the Dallas County Board of Education. Demario Benjamin and Kobi Little are both running for the office of Constable in Dallas County.
Alston Keith, chairman of the Dallas County Democratic Party, said he was pleased with all the candidates.
The candidates won’t be officially qualified until Monday morning, when the county approves the qualifications. Because the deadline for qualifying was at 5 p.m. and the Dallas County Courthouse closed at 4:30 p.m. the list won’t be official until
Monday, although no new names can be added to the list.
Voters in Dallas County go to the polls on June 1, to make their decisions for who’ll represent either party. Registration deadlines for new and renewing voters are May 21 to vote in the June primary.
In a primary election, a candidate must win with 50 percent of the votes cast plus one. If no candidate wins 50 percent plus one, then a runoff is called. The two highest polling candidates must run again.
All voters must present identification to be able to vote in the election. Forms of ID acceptable include a drivers license and a utility bill with a recent address.
