Keith High School student Germaine Brown got a small taste of the political life a few weeks ago after spending three days as a page for Lt. Gov. Lucy Baxley.

Brown, a junior at Keith, was one of three teens chosen to participate in this unique opportunity through the Selma Chapter of Jack and Jill of America and their teen sponsor, attorney Carolyn Gains-Varner.

Brown’s duties as a page included assisting Baxley and her staff with transporting messages and running errands.

Brown also sat in on three legislative sessions during his time in Montgomery.

While serving as a page, Brown had the opportunity to meet and chat with Gov. Bob Riley and Sen. Hank Sanders.

He also met many other elected officials from across the state during his visit to the capital.

Brown said he thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would recommend other students take advantage of the opportunity to be a page.

After getting a first-hand look at how the state government operates and the challenges faced by elected officials, Brown may decided the world of politics would be perfect for him.

Brown’s mother, Melvin Flangan-Brown, principal of Salem Elementary School, said her son’s time as a page is something he will never forget.

Brown said he and his family have been a part of the Jack and Jill organization since he was 4-years-old and enjoys doing community service work with them.

He served as parliamentarian of the Jack and Jill teen group and currently hold the office of Chaplain.

Being chosen to work as a page for Baxley was just one of many accomplishments Brown has achieved in his high school career.

Besides being a football and basketball player at Keith, he is also a representative for the school’s Student Government Association.

With all of these combined, there is little doubt Brown is one Dallas County resident who has a bright future ahead of him.
