Selma High School’s Lady Saints were honored by the city school board Thursday evening for their many accomplishments this basketball season.
During the school board’s regular meeting, Board President Nancy Bennett presented the Lady Saints with a large plaque listing each team members’ name and all their tournament wins.
Superintendent Dr. James Cater also recognized Lady Saints head coach Anthony Harris as Selma City Schools’ Coach of the Year.
Carter said he was very impressed with the way the girls performed on and off the court, adding that he was proud of the dignity they upheld.
Bennett and Carter
acknowledged the Selma High men’s basketball team as well, presenting the teens and their coach with similar plaque of their own.
Once all the congratulatory was over, board members got back to the business of running the school system.
Several administrative items on the agenda were approved by the board, including requests to increase the pay of substitute teachers and instructional assistants who have at least two years of college education.
In order to meet
national standards and attract quality employees, the board decided to increase the pay scale for substitute teachers to $55 per day beginning in the 2004-05 school year.
Instructional assistants will see their pay increase to between $13,500 to $15,000 next year.
The board also approved the use of Professional Education Personnel Evaluation (PEPE) System for assessing the performance of individuals.
The PEPE System, according to Carter, will be used for the specific purpose of making employment decisions like continued contract, transfer, and promotions.
Other items discussed during the board meeting include:
Approved continuation of the summer school program for 2004.
Approved revised policies for gun-free schools and search and seizure.
End meeting for executive session.
