Trojans retire Morton’s number

Double zero added up to a lot for the Meadowview Trojans this season.

Senior post John Robert Morton’s outstanding final season ended with one more award Monday night at Meadowview’s basketball banquet.

Of course, scoring 30.7 points a game and snagging 14.2 rebounds a contest has a way of helping a guy pile up the trophies.

But Morton’s senior season was about more than awards and that was evident in the emotion he showed , thanking his coach and his team.

The retiring of his jersey came as a surprise to Morton, but Meadowview coach Rick Raines said it was an honor Morton richly deserved.

Though Meadowview didn’t win a lot of games this season, they scared a lot of good AISA teams with Morton’s play inside.

The senior worked hard on his game in the off-season and he quickly showed off his new confidence.

He scored 10 points in the first game of the season then exploded for

41.

Jokingly, his friends asked if planned to do that every night.

He nearly did.

Morton went over 40 points four times on the season and had a beautiful 53-point outing late in the year.

Despite facing defenses designed to stop him, Morton shot 55 percent from the field.

Morton wasn’t the only player honored on the night.

Both he and Lady Trojan Haley McIntyre were named team MVP’s while various awards were given to both varsity and junior varsity players throughout the night.

Lady Trojans’ coach Mike Cassebaum said he’s gearing up for another run at the state title.
