Law enforcement authorities currently seek a suspect in the Wednesday afternoon robbery of SouthTrust Bank.

A man entered SouthTrust Bank’s downtown location at 4:20 p.m. and handed a note to an employee demanding money, said Ray Zicarelli, special agent with the FBI. &uot;No weapon was displayed,&uot; he added. &uot;No one was injured.&uot;

After taking an undisclosed amount of money, the suspect fled the bank in an unknown direction. Authorities don’t know if he fled on foot or by car.

When officers reached the bank the suspect had already left, according to Police Chief Robert Green.

Law enforcement authorities and bank employees remained inside the bank at 6 p.m., though employees began leaving shortly afterward. Two worried relatives of an employee waited in the parking lot before three tellers exited the building and left.

Bank employees declined to comment.

Attempts to contact SouthTrust president Stephen Rogers were unsuccessful at the time of publication.

&uot;We’re covering leads and hoping someone will reveal information about the robbery,&uot; Zicarelli said.

The suspect is described as a 5-foot-5-inch black male with light to medium complexion, weighing about 150 pounds and wearing a short-sleeve white T-shirt and glasses. He is about 35 to 40 years old.

The Selma Police Department and the FBI are jointly investigating the robbery. Anyone with information should contact the police at 874-6611 or the FBI at 251-438-3674.
