Most people this Christmas will wake up to find presents stuffed underneath their Christmas tree. Stockings will be hung with care by the fireplace, candy canes waiting for wide-eyed children to scramble down the stairs and see what Santa has brought them.

But that’s only most of the people. There are many that won’t have a Christmas tree or stockings. There won’t be candy canes or presents.

That is, unless we help.

Toys for Tots gives us the chance to ensure all children have a present on Christmas morning. The program, facilitated by the U.S. Marines Corps Reserves, helps children have Christmas, according to Marines Staff Sgt. Christopher Jones. &uot;It’s just one of the things we do for them,&uot; he said.

It’s one of the things we can all do for them.

Several brightly-decorated donation boxes can be found across Selma. According to Carver Boynton, general manager of the Selma Mall, Shoney’s and the Centre for Commerce are two locations in addition to the mall where people can drop off a gift for needy children.

We hope more businesses will choose to have donation boxes before this year’s Toys for Tots program ends.

We couldn’t agree more.

People wishing to donate should bring new toys in good condition to one of the donation sites. The gifts don’t have to be wrapped, but the price tags should be removed.

Most people are assured of a merry Christmas; many aren’t. We should remember those less fortunate than us, especially during this time of year, and help them not only with our hearts, but with our hands.
