Coach Willie Maxey Jr. and his Selma High Saints come into the 2003-2004 season with some question marks.

The fun part will be finding the answers.

The beauty of a basketball season is a team has time to build, learn and grow.

The Saints may not be a title team yet, but they have the whole season to work on it.

One of the Saints’ keys this season will be the play of guard Brandon Davis.

Randall Rutledge is back for the Saints this season and Adrian Allen brings a versatile presence.

Allen can play shooting guard, small forward or power forward.

The Saints have good size inside in Jeremy Carter, Eric Martinear, Devon Murphy, Malcolm McCrittenden and Darrett Fletcher.

One of the inside players to catch Maxey’s eye has been Carter.

Murphy, Martinear and McCrittenden will provide depth up front.

Maxey also singled out another player for his work ethic.

Maxey expects to be able to utilize the team’s depth.

The players’ development depended a lot on camps this off-season.

Players worked at basketball camps in Birmingham, Tennessee and as far away as California.

Some of the players that improved the most were on junior varsity last season, but Maxey expects them to step up.

With so many untested positions, the Saints are still trying to find their way.

But it’s a fun challenge for the coach and his team.
