Strong pitching and the bat of Justin Seele helped lead the Morgan Academy Senators to a 3-1 win over the Autauga Academy Generals at home Saturday.

Trey Pike, head baseball coach of Morgan Academy, said teamwork was key for the Senators.

“We just came out and played hard and played together,” Pike said. “We played hard against a really good ball team. Playing as a team is our biggest thing that we’re trying to concentrate on. We’re a bunch of average guys that play hard and that’s what I want us to know.”

The Generals (19-6) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning but Morgan answered back in the bottom of the fourth, when Seele hit a shot in the gap to center that drove in Matt McKinney and Cobb Bostick, giving the Senators a 2-1 lead.

Seele wasn’t done on the day, as he struck again in the bottom of the sixth inning, singling and driving in McKinney again to give the Senators a 3-1 lead.

Seele ended the day 3-3 with 3 RBIs. As a team, the Senators had five hits throughout the game.

Morgan got strong performances from the mound, as starting pitcher John Pomeroy stuck out four batters in two innings, while relief pitcher Joel Yarbrough struck out eight batters in five innings.

 

Morgan 7, Monroe 5

Not even the lights briefly going out in the bottom of the fifth could stop the Morgan Academy comeback as the Senators (9-3, 3-0) battled from behind to defeat the Monroe Academy Volunteers 7-5, Saturday at home.

The win capped off a Saturday sweep for Morgan.

The Senators trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the third when Cobb Bostick hit a sac fly that scored a runner and tied the game 1-1.

But the Volunteers took control, scoring four runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 5-1 lead.

The Senators fought back in the bottom of the fourth inning, as John Pomeroy and Craig Price each scored runs in the inning and cut the Volunteers’ lead to 5-3.

The Senators struck again when Joel Yarbrough hit a shot to deep right-center field that allowed him to double and drive in two runs, tying the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The game was briefly stopped as the field’s lights went out but it didn’t hurt the Senators’ momentum.

When power was restored, Parker Hughes provided some more power for the Senators’ offense, as he hit a line drive to right field that allowed teammates Dalton Lee and Yarbrough to score, making it a 7-5 game and completing Morgan’s comeback.
