Walk For Life set for Saturday

There are nearly 12 million babies who are born every year in the U.S. and nearly 500,000 are aborted, according to pregnancy statistics. One local organization wants to help “save a life” one step at a time.
The Selma-Dallas County Sav-A-Life Inc. crisis pregnancy center, will hold its annual “Walk For Life” Saturday, April 14 at 10 a.m. Registration is free and begins at 9 a.m.
The 2-mile walk will begin from First Baptist Church’s Educational building parking lot, circle the center located on Union Street, and end at First Baptist Church.
Sav-A-Life director Jennifer Dobbs said the event is ideal for families.
“It’s a good family event — bring your children with their bicycles,” Dobbs said. “We’ll have snacks and drinks. This (event) enables our center to keep offering services. We don’t get enough monthly donations to sustain us so this keeps us offering our services for free.”
Raising more than $8,000 in 2011, organizers for the walk said the event is the center’s biggest fundraiser.
“It continues to grow and build,” Dobbs said a previous interview with the Times-Journal. “We offer free pregnancy testing. We want mothers to make an educated decision and understand what the options are. The most selfless thing a mother can give is life to her child.”
The Knights of Columbus, a fraternal service organization, has given several monetary donations to the organization in years past. The organization presented the center with a $1,000 check in early March.
“They do real well on the walk … that’s what got us involved,” said member Paul Robitaille, who believes the organization’s cause is a worthy one. “These young folks come over there who are getting ready to have a baby and they’re looking for help. Some have the intention of having an abortion but they’re talked out of it over there … all the ones that go there are helped.”
Walkers can set goals for $200 for a free T-shirt, $350, $500 or $1,000. For more information about the event or sponsorship and to register, call 875-8900.
Sav-A-Life is a Christian-based center offering community services and positive solutions and alternatives such as medical referrals, material support and bible studies to pregnant mothers in need. The organization is funded through fundraisers and individual and church donations.
