Work on supporting jobs program

There is something about having a job that provides a person a sense of purpose. In many cases, the value of the job far outweighs the money earned for doing that job.

It is with that in mind, that we offer strong endorsement of Mayor George Evans, the Selma City Council and their plan to significantly grow their annual summer jobs program from the 100 teenagers that have been hired in the past to as many as 300 and beyond.

The program — which is partially funded by the city — is only as strong as the support it receives from the outside community, area businesses and other contributors.

The city will hold its annual summer youth employment program beginning Monday, June 11 and for six weeks will give area youth valuable work experience; experience that can be included on a resume and application.

Employees will be placed throughout the city, working for departments such as parks and recreation and the fire department.

Each student will work for six weeks and be paid a total of $750.

Applications for employment are available at area schools and Selma City Hall and are due no later than April 30. Those seeking more information are asked to call 874-2102.

We know economic times are tough for area businesses and contributing to this program might be a stretch, but it is important. It is important we help the next generation develop the skills necessary to be successful in life.

We join the mayor and council in calling for strong support for the community.

Let’s get to work, Selma.
