With the Dallas County Relay for Life less than a week away, team captains met for the final time Tuesday to discuss last-minute details and team strategies before the big event, set for April 27.

Relay chair Tanya Miles said during the meeting, captains picked their campsite spots and their designated times for bank night, or when team monies should be turned in.

Miles said things are going well.

“It has been just a joy planning this event,” Miles said. “We started in November. We’re praying the community comes out and helps us push the $100,000 goal.”

There are still things the public can do, Miles said, to support the Relay for Life.

“We have luminarias for sale for $5. The chair is Katrina Freine and you can contact her at 875-7937 or 874-9566,” Miles said. “We’ll be selling tickets at relay to raffle off footballs signed by the NFL, Auburn and Alabama players, and an Alabama State football.”

With the seventh annual Sherri S. James Survivors Banquet scheduled for Monday at 6 p.m. inside the Carl C. Morgan Convention Center and the relay set for April 27 at 6 p.m. inside Memorial Stadium, Miles said she thanks the public for its support in making both events a success in times past.

“We thank the community for the support they have shown and will continue to show,” Miles said. “We thank you for helping to raise funds to help the people of Dallas County fight against cancer.”

Last year, the group shattered its $65,000 goal, raising nearly $110,000 for the American Cancer Society.
