Champions were crowned and history was made in the second and final day of the 2012 Alabama Independent School Association state championship track meet at Memorial Stadium Thursday.

The Morgan Academy Lady Senators were crowned the girls overall state champion, as they scored 122 points as a team to defeat Lee-Scott Academy, which had 99 points.

Rob Robinson, head track and field coach of Morgan Academy, said the Lady Senators are a great group, and it took a team effort to take their first track and field state championship since 2001.

“They’re just a very good track team and it was a team effort,” Robinson said. “Everybody contributed in their own way. Lots of people had some great individual performances, but everybody else had to contribute, too, in order to score that many points in the track meet.”

The day was also a historic one for another local school, as the Ellwood Christian Academy Eagles claimed top honors for Class A in only the first year of their track and field program.

The Ellwood girls won Class A outright, while the boys tied with Jackson Academy.

John Glasscock, head track and field coach of Ellwood Christian Academy, said the victories are great for the program and will only help to build it even more moving forward.

“That was exciting. I’m very happy that both teams won. It’s just something to build on and it’s just going to give us momentum and motivation to improve the program and to work hard,” Glasscock said. “I think it’ll help get more kids out to track next year because there’s a lot of talent at the school that doesn’t run track, and I think this will offer some encouragement because they’ll realize that if you work hard you’ll accomplish something.”

After Megan Leigh Siddens won the state title in high jump and Jaycee Sanders won the title in the 3200 meter girls run on Wednesday, Morgan continued to rack up the titles on Thursday, as the girl’s 4 x 200 meter relay team of Rachel Gomes, Sarah Frasier, Anna Kate Mock-Jordan and Mary Peyton Deer captured a state crown with a time of 1:53.06.

Gomes finished her career at Morgan by winning her fifth title in both the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles, giving her a total of ten individual hurdles titles.

Gomes also won the title in the long jump.

Jordan finished second behind Gomes in the 300-meter hurdles.

Frasier was named the most valuable player for the girls division, as she won the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes.

Morgan’s Hunter Rogers also took first place in the boy’s shot put throw.

For Ellwood, the girl’s 4 x 200 meter relay team of Ashkari Little, Shaquana Young, Nivia Davis and Makayla Berry finished first among Class A schools with a time of 2:01.85.

The Ellwood girl’s 4 x 400-meter relay team of Berry, Little, Davis and Della Lucy was first among Class A schools with a time of 4:58.63.

The Ellwood boy’s 4 x 400 meter relay team of Michael Smith, Arthur Jones, Stacy Russell and Kareem Ross finished fourth, first among Class A, with a time of 3:58.33.
